If you want to immerse yourself in the cultural and culinary essence of Mauritius, a journey of discovery through the country’s varied markets is a must. Often nestled in the heart of villages and towns, these bazaars, as they are commonly called by the locals, each have their own individuality and atmosphere.

Flacq, the authentic market par excellence

The Flacq bazaar, the largest open-air market on the island, unfolds in a burst of color. It opens its doors every day, but it’s Wednesdays and Sundays that it’s in full swing, with all the stands in place. The space is laid out in such a way as to allow a comfortable stroll among the local fruit and vegetables, in a concert of dialogue between shopkeepers and shoppers. There’s a pleasant feeling of conviviality and sharing. You’ll find, among other things, seafood caught daily, and the irresistible vanilla, the culinary flagship of the place. A wide range of herbal teas awaits you, and why not try a delicious cane juice, fresh from the surrounding plantations?

The Port Louis bazaar, a lively hub of activity

The capital’s market reflects the picturesque character of Mauritian life. Inaugurated in 1828, this is one of the oldest bazaars, a veritable mosaic of life and color. Shopkeepers compete with each other to attract shoppers, who don’t shy away from bargaining. You’re immersed in a vibrant atmosphere, experiencing flavors with freshly made noodles, ready to be cooked Mauritian-style: fried or in broth. Market spaces are well defined: groceries on the first floor, crafts on the upper floor. There’s even a corner reserved especially for gourmets, where local culinary specialties: dholl puri, farata, alouda, pastries and more, can be savored.

The Grand Baie market, the panache of colors

The Grand Baie bazaar, inaugurated in 2000 and located five minutes from the town center, is a colorful mosaic of quaint stores and restaurants. The Chinese Buddha figures welcoming visitors at the entrance promise luck, happiness and prosperity if, as legend has it, you touch their bellies. Its uniqueness lies in the absence of sales of vegetables and other food products, although a catering area is present. This market is an ideal representation of the island’s cultural diversity. From traditional clothing, such as sega skirts and pareos, to exotic souvenirs like seashells and handcrafted wooden dodos, you’ll find it all. And for an authentic experience, try henna at one of the local stalls.

The Mahebourg market, where conviviality rhymes with simplicity

The Mahebourg market, in the south of the island and a stone’s throw from the famous esplanade, epitomizes the real Mauritian market. The welcome here is so warm you’d almost think you were in a family. Local residents are known for their generosity and friendliness. Here you’ll find fresh flowers, local street food, some of the best fresh fish on the island, and a wide variety of vegetables and spices. The cacophony of bright colors and the fragrance of tropical fruits will immerse you in a truly exotic atmosphere. You’ll be tempted to try the spicy samosas, chilli cakes and other fried dishes, served from the back of motorcycles or from small stalls.

Quatre Bornes market, second only to Port Louis

The well-known Quatre Bornes market welcomes visitors several times a week. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, it’s a rendezvous for vegetables, and sartorial delights unfold on Thursdays and Sundays. Very popular all over the island, you’ll find fashionable clothes at great prices. We also sell fabrics: Indian tapestries, tablecloths, traditional garments… It’s the place to go to understand local urban culture. As for on-site dining, you can sample a myriad of typical dishes, from briani to fried mine and dholl puri.
