Part of the Mascarene Islands panorama, Rodrigues is the smallest of the coral islands. Magnificently enveloped by a lagoon on a spectacular scale, it is also flanked by several satellite islands. This little island wonder is particularly renowned for its environmental prowess, from the strict ban on plastic use to the establishment of wind farms and desalination plants.

As for its beaches, they stand out for their picturesque beauty and rare authenticity. Touching the velvety, almost sacred ivory-colored sand, under the golden rays caressing the crystal-clear waters, we discover treasures protected from the onslaught of mass tourism. In contrast to the frenetic pace of Mauritian shores, the coastline of Rodrigues offers an incomparable experience, an invitation to escape and serenity.

Anse Bouteille: An oasis of striking beauty

Perched in the south-east of Rodrigues is the picturesque beach ofAnse Bouteille, in stark contrast to its wilder neighbor. Sandwiched between the ruggedness of the rocks and the infinity of the ocean, the panorama is overwhelming – you’d think you’d just landed on a postcard-perfect vista. What sets this gem apart from other beaches is its intimate cove and captivating emerald-green waters.

The abundance of exotic fish and the varied hues of coral are a feast for divers’ eyes. However, currents can sometimes be unpredictable and vigorous, implying a need for vigilance while enjoying the underwater wonder. Nevertheless, Anse Bouteille remains a sublime haven for all those who aspire to take a dip in the ocean with their fins, masks and snorkels to party with the underwater fauna.

The beach, which underneath its apparent tranquility is only accessible on foot, is a perfect destination for basking in the sun. Local animals, such as goats and cows, chewing their daily meal on the nearby cliffs, only enhance the uniqueness of this exotic sanctuary.

Anse Mourouk: Water fun paradise

Anse Mourouk, with its well-established reputation, is one of the most popular kitesurfing spots on the planet. Nestled in the heart of the south of the island, this beach enjoys the persistent mild trade winds almost all year round. The sun’s golden rays gently caress the ocean waters, creating an ideal temperature that contributes to and amplifies its considerable appeal. Framed by powerful currents and generous winds, this is a regular venue for passionate international jousting. With an average wind force of between 20 and 25 knots, conditions are proving to be an ideal playground for all enthusiasts of this nautical discipline, whether neophytes or seasoned sailors. This paradisiacal enclave is a major attraction during competitions, attracting a multitude of kitesurfers from the four corners of the globe to indulge in their vocation, lulled by the sparkling waters of the lagoon. A guarantee of safety and an attractive offer that make Anse Mourouk a remarkable destination in every respect.

Nestled in the heart of nature, Trou d’Argent: a captivating marvel

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world, nestled to the east in a coastal indentation surrounded by lush greenery, Trou d’ Argent beach enjoys a well-deserved reputation. It stands out as the island’s most dazzling sand jewel. Sandwiched between two rocky cliffs, its mystical allure is magnified. The colors of the deep gray rocks, the sparkling white sand and the vibrant blue of the ocean, teeming with fish, create a breathtaking contrast. According to local legend, on dazzling sunny days, you can catch a glimpse of a submerged chain, a guide to a cryptic treasure. But to date, no inquisitive soul seems to have managed to unearth this mysterious booty… Beyond its dazzling beauty, which makes it one of the most splendid in the region, the Trou d’ Argent shoreline is one of the world’s thirty most unspoilt beaches. Its exceptional preservation is due to its limited accessibility. To get there, travellers have to hike rocky paths that wind around the Fumier, Anse Ally and Saint Franรงois beaches.

Port Sud-Est: an authentic place of incomparable calm

Far from prying eyes, one beach stands out for its serene silence: Port Sud-Est. This Eden in the heart of the ocean reveals a pristine white beach, embraced by the azure waters of its lagoon. You may well come across the famous octopus pickers, hunters of an endemic species of octopus, moving nonchalantly along the waves.

So who are they? These women, models of patience, gaze with exquisite attention at their future prey before an assault born of a furtive, resolute gesture, orchestrated by a sharp pike. In Rodrigues, the hunt is passed down from matriline to matriline, a women’s tradition that has been going strong for centuries.

Ah, the Rodrigues octopus! Renowned for its exquisite flavor, it can be enjoyed in any number of ways, to the delight of gourmets. However, these tentacled creatures are not permanently hunted down. At certain times of the year, there’s a truce: fishing is interrupted. This allows our female octopuses to devote themselves wholeheartedly to laying eggs for their successors. A fine example of enlightened consumption, ensuring a flourishing octopus population and giving each individual the time to develop to its optimum size in its native ecosystem.

Ile aux Chats, an extraordinary nature sanctuary

Perched below Rodrigues,Ile aux Chats is established as an ecological reserve, borderingIle Hermitage. This isolated land is home to prolific colonies of blackish birds known as noddis. Surrounded by a coral reef, the island is protected from erosion by incessant waves. It’s home to a colossal lagoon, a hidden treasure rich in swarms of barracudas, countless sea creatures and colorful corals.

The island is especially appreciated and acclaimed by diving enthusiasts for its congested diving and snorkeling sites. As well as exploring an underwater world full of vibrant hues, you’ll find it easy to revel in the calm, transparent pools, enjoying the benefits of a refreshing swim.

Rodrigues’ exotic treasure: Cocos Island

Perched just 4km off the east coast of Rodrigues,Cocos Island stands out as an imposing white sandbank. What makes it special is its accessibility, which is mainly by pirogue, a traditional craft. At low tide, half of this picturesque adventure is completed on foot rather than by pirogue. Considered a nature reserve, this sanctuary for avian fauna is a stopover for migratory birds from the Mascarene Islands.

A hiking trail, carefully guarded by locals, offers visitors a privileged opportunity to observe four distinct species of seabirds up close: sooty terns, white terns, and the two varieties of noddis found here. While the idyllic setting of the foothills lends itself to wonderful walks, the center of the island remains deliberately protected from human activity, helping to preserve its rich biodiversity.

Nevertheless, it is important to stress that any visit to this preserved site can only take place with government approval. This directive ensures that the tranquillity and balance of this exceptionally biodiverse area are respected.

Saint Francis, a singularly attractive jewel

Nestling at the northeastern tip of Rodrigues, the dazzling beach of Saint Franรงois is a real feast for the eyes, like a pearl nestled between two majestic bays. Its remarkable setting makes it a popular destination for indulging in the celebration of sun and sea. Although its reputation attracts larger crowds than other beaches in Rodrigues, this in no way detracts from its picturesque charm.

Gently shaded by an abundant thicket of filaos, Saint Franรงois is caressed by the winds and waves that constantly brush its sand, rendering it brilliantly white and exquisitely fine. It’s a favorite spot for sunbathing, swimming in the energizing aura of its waters, and exploring its teeming, colorful reef via snorkeling, an activity particularly suited to the limpidity of Saint Franรงois‘ azure waters.

Its lagoon is a veritable marine sanctuary, home to an infinite variety of fish and coral, making it as fascinating above as below the surface of the water.

The discreet charm of Plage de Graviers, a haven of serenity

Opening onto the crystal-clear waters that surround it, the discreet yet majestic Graviers beach stands out with its long ribbon of golden sand below. Although it boasts unequivocal beauty, this beach remains strangely in the shadows, its frequentation curiously limited. In addition, a mysterious lagoon intrudes into the coastline, outlining a waterway that reinvents itself as a small stream.

Further out, wisely moored to the shore, a myriad of fishermen’s boats in kaleidoscopic hues provide a picturesque backdrop. And to round off this paradisiacal sketch, as you walk along the coast to reach the end of the beach, you come across the welcoming table d’hรดte Chez Tonio. A convivial place where you can sit down at any time of the day to savor authentic local dishes, composed essentially of freshly caught fish and octopus, then simmered over a wood fire with a mastery that borders on culinary art. These exotic delicacies, clean and fresh, promise an explosion of flavors to tantalize your taste buds.
