Whale & Dolphin Watching
Sperm whales and humpback whales off the west coast, from the austral winter into spring.
From June to November, the deep waters off the Mauritian west coast welcome sperm whales and humpback whales. Departing from Rivière Noire, the outing often combines whale watching with the early-morning encounter with the dolphins, present all year round. A rare experience, guided with respect for the animals.
The whale season in Mauritius
Whales visit Mauritius during the austral winter:
- Sperm whales: present for much of the year, peaking in the austral summer
- Humpback whales: from June/July to October-November
- Observation from the boat, keeping to the regulatory distances
- Dolphins all year round, often included in the same outing
Responsible watching
Approaching whales is regulated in Mauritius. We favour respectful operators: approach distances, limited time, no chasing. We watch from the boat — getting into the water with whales is not guaranteed and depends strictly on conditions and regulations.
- Whale season: June to November
- Dolphins all year round
- West coast departure (Rivière Noire)
- Respectful, regulated approach
Frequently asked questions
When can you see whales in Mauritius ?
The best time for humpback whales runs from June/July to October-November, on the west coast. Sperm whales can be seen over a larger part of the year.
Can you swim with the whales ?
Watching is mainly done from the boat. A supervised entry into the water is sometimes possible depending on conditions and regulations, but is never guaranteed. Dolphins, on the other hand, lend themselves better to swimming.
Are we guaranteed to see whales ?
No: they're wild animals. In peak season, sightings are frequent but never guaranteed. We'll advise the best time slots to maximise your chances.
