What documents do the Mauritian authorities require to stay in their paradise? Passport, proof of residence, financial capacity… let’s take a closer look.
The land that has long been the dodo’s refuge has lifted its sanitary measures in connection with Covid-19. However, the main island of the Republic of Mauritius applies a few constraints to welcome visitors. That’s why it’s crucial to be informed before planning your trip, so you don’t fall flat on your face when you arrive. ID card, passport, visa… Here’s a summary of the papers you need to remember before setting sail for Mauritius.
What travel documents do I need to visit Mauritius?
It’s often referred to as “Paradise Island” because of the warm welcome extended by its residents… However, the authorities will not turn a blind eye to the presence of certain documents when you enter Mauritius. For stays not exceeding three months, a valid passport and a return ticket are essential. In some cases, proof of residency and financial resources (at a rate of US$100 per day) may be required.
There is an exemption for French residents of La Rรฉunion, whether they are over 18 or under 18. They can only enter Mauritius with their (valid) identity card if they plan to stay for more than two nights. Be careful, though: this exception, introduced on September 19, 2022, will expire on June 30, 2023.
For those wishing to stay longer than three months on the island: a visa is required. Those planning to work in Mauritius for more than 90 days must also apply for a work and/or residence permit from the Mauritian Passport and Immigration Service. This application must be submitted before departure to Mauritius.
