Nestled in the heart of Mauritius, the Grand Bassin lake is not only a natural gem but also a vital spiritual center for the local Hindu community. This unique site attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to seek tranquility and spirituality in a breathtaking setting. Discover with us this place where lush nature and sacred traditions come together harmoniously.

A place steeped in history

The history of Grand Bassin begins in 19th century with the arrival of the first Indian workers in Mauritius. Primarily Hindu, these immigrants felt a deep lack of a sacred place similar to the Ganges River in India, essential for their purification rites. It was then that in 1897, a priest named Shri Jhummon Giri Gosagne had a mystical vision revealing that the waters of Great Bassin were connected to those of the Ganges. This revelation quickly transformed the lake into a recognized sacred site.

The following year, pilgrims flocked to Grand Bassin, thus establishing a tradition that continues to this day. In 1972, Swamis from India participated in a ceremony with Prime Minister Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam to mix the water of the Ganges with that of Grand Bassin, thus strengthening the spiritual link between the two places.

The Maha Shivaratree festival

Grand Bassin becomes particularly vibrant during the Maha festival Shivaratree, a celebration dedicated to the god Shiva. Every year, thousands of pilgrims travel miles on foot to participate in this great ceremony, reinforcing the sacred atmosphere of the place. The festival transforms Grand Bassin into a true center of collective devotion, where songs, prayers and offerings create an unforgettable atmosphere.

A sanctuary of serenity

The atmosphere at Grand Bassin is marked by a deep peace which invites meditation and rejuvenation. Visitors immediately feel the serene energy of the place, ideal for a break from the daily hustle and bustle. This tranquility is accentuated by impressive religious architecture with, in particular, a monumental statue of Shiva dominating the site. In 2017, a statue of Goddess Durga was erected, measuring 33 meters, representing the sacred figure of 108 feet in Hinduism.

This setting promotes a deep connection with oneself and with the surrounding nature. Whether you are a believer or simply looking for tranquility, Grand Bassin offers a perfect refuge for reflection and inner peace.

Imposing statues

The statues of Shiva and Durga are powerful symbols of the spirituality that permeates Grand Bassin. Each measuring 33 meters, they attract the eye from afar and establish a feeling of grandeur and respect. Created to be focal points of devotion, these spiritual works of art also contribute to Grand Bassinโ€™s strong visual identity.

Exceptional natural wealth

Apart from its spiritual importance, Grand Bassin is also distinguished by its lush biodiversity. Situated at an altitude of 540 meters in a mountainous and isolated region of the Savane district, the lake and its surroundings are home to abundant wildlife. The forests around the lake are particularly known for their populations of mischievous monkeys.

These mischievous primates are often observed venturing near temples where they search for food among the offerings left by pilgrims. This natural interaction adds a touch of wildlife and authenticity to your visit.

Diverse flora

The vegetation around Grand Bassin is equally impressive. From majestic trees to plants endemic, the local flora helps to create a soothing and green environment. Walking around the lake is dive into an ecosystem where each plant and each tree evokes the splendor of Mauritian nature.

  • Exotic scents of local flowers
  • Refreshing shade from century-old trees
  • Hiking trails offering panoramic views

Access and practical advice

Grand Bassin is accessible from different parts of the island, however, it is recommended to have a vehicle for more of convenience. Located approximately 550 meters above sea level, journey itself through the mountainous roads offers spectacular scenery which adds to the overall experience.

Remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. The climate can vary quickly in altitude, so bringing a light jacket is always a good idea. It is also advisable to respect local customs, especially if you participate in ceremonies or visit temples.

Best times to visit

The period of Maha Shivaratree is incomparable for those who wish to fully experience the spiritual atmosphere of Grand Bassin. However, for those who prefer less crowded tours, any other time of year offers an equally rewarding experience, without the crowds. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to enjoy the tranquility of the place.
