Kitesurfing in Rodrigues

The irresistible charm of Rodrigues, a little protege of Mauritius, lies mainly in its impressive lagoon, which spreads its emerald blue over almost 200 km², an aquatic jewel almost three times the size of the island itself. Everywhere, kitesurfing enthusiasts succumb to its charm. This lagoon is the perfect blend of reef areas and smooth water, prickling every kiteboarder’s adrenalin with waves seemingly made for such a sporting activity. Trade winds from the south sweep across the surface, slamming into the lagoon, which is so flat it offers a wide playground for a series of downwinds, jumping from one islet to the next, enhancing the experience of this fantastic sport. Now that’s kitesurfing jargon for you!

A sport in balance with nature

The island of Rodrigues, spearheading the environmental cause, has identified kitesurfing as the sport that meets its sustainability principles. The local population has warmly welcomed this discipline since its introduction in 1997, largely thanks to its negligible impact on the ecosystem. Rodrigues’ unique shallow but wide lagoon is ideal for beginners and experienced kiteboarders alike.

Currently four kite schools, all located near Mourouk beach, reflect the growing popularity of the sport among local residents. They even host meetings and sporting events on occasion around the island.

When is the best time to kitesurf in Rodrigues?

It is estimated that Rodrigues enjoys windy days for almost two-thirds of the year, i.e. around 220 days. The best time to kitesurf and admire the island in all its splendor is from May to October, corresponding to the austral winter. During this period, the wind increases and temperatures drop slightly.

And if you’re afraid of cold water, don’t worry! Even in winter, the water maintains a comfortable temperature of over 24°C. Phew!

Anse Mourouk: the ultimate kitesurfing spot in Rodrigues

There’s no denying it, Anse Mourouk is a kitesurfer’s Eldorado. Renowned for its prevailing winds, Mourouk beach offers ideal conditions for all levels of expertise.

The vastness of the sea offers beginners plenty of room to manoeuvre their sails. They can adjust the “window” according to the wind’s behavior, without having to fear the tearing blows of the water. In these waters, you’ll find no obstacles, no coral rocks, just fine sand swept by shallow turquoise waves.

The choice of accommodation for a kitesurfing holiday in Rodrigues

It goes without saying that for a kitesurfing holiday in Rodrigues, staying near Anse Mourouk is a must!

Play Mourouk, nestled in the foothills with panoramic views over the expanse of the lagoon, is a humble hotel brimming with friendliness. It offers comfortable rooms and delicious Creole and international cuisine, prepared with freshly caught fish every day. There’s no better way to reward yourself after a day of thrills and spills!

International Kitesurf Festival

Since its inauguration in 2013, the Festival International de Kitesurf de Rodrigues (RIFK) has been an annual sporting event usually held at the end of June on Mourouk beach. It offers the opportunity to discover all the island’s spots: Catherine Island, Plaine Corail, Graviers, Anse Mourouk and Cocos Island.

The festival aims to establish Rodrigues as a sporty, ecologically conscious and tourism-oriented destination. Nicolas Hulot, a pre-eminent champion of the environmental cause, was the patron of the event. Photographers from all over the world flock here to capture the beauty of this exceptionally festive and colorful event, which transforms into a veritable ballet of sails in the sky. Locals join in the excitement too, with stalls selling local specialities, open-air picnics, and the party continues even after dusk with DJ performances, dancing and traditional music on the beach.

A magnificent lagoon, ideal weather conditions and an island lifestyle like no other; Rodrigues has everything it takes to proclaim itself a top kitesurfing destination. Don’t wait any longer, come and experience this dream holiday.
